HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Cold Springs Eagles squared off against the Hanceville Bulldogs in Friday’s third-place game of this year’s Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament and the hosting Bulldogs knocked off Cold Springs 67-58.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter for both squads early on. A Brody Peppers three-point play gave the Eagles a 12-10 lead, but Hanceville’s Izayah Glenon tied it up again. Then an intentional foul on Adam Hill sent Glenon to the line where he knocked down 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. He added two more from the line later on to give the Bulldogs a 15-12 lead. Tanner Kilgo then hit a short shot to make it a 15-14 game after one.
It was more of the same in the second period as both teams came out scoring to start the quarter. An Adam Hill layup tied the game up at 24, but Matthew Cornelius hit a trey and Raiden Morgan dunked the ball and got fouled and got hit with a technical. He completed the three-point play to give the Bulldogs a 30-24 lead. Micah Calvert then hit the technical free throws before hitting a layup to make it a 30-28 game. A Tyson Bellmon three stretched Hanceville’s lead to 33-28 and then to 37-31 after four straight points by Morgan. Cold Springs scored the final five points of the quarter, including a Calvert three, as Hanceville went into the half up by one at 37-36.
The second half started out the same as the first as both teams hit key shots to keep the game close. After Cold Springs’ Seth Williams tied the game up at 42 at the free-throw line, it was Hanceville that put together a huge run as five different players scored during a 13-0 quarter-ending run to give the Bulldogs a 55-42 lead going into the final quarter.
Cold Springs looked for a run of its own to start out the quarter, but early on, Hanceville answered multiple Eagle baskets with baskets of their own. A Morgan trey made it 62-49, but Cold Springs went on that run as four points by Brody Peppers and a three by Logan Rice made it a 64-56 contest. That was as close as the Eagles got the rest of the way as the Bulldogs went on to take the third-place game, 67-58.
Morgan finished with 21 points, five rebounds, and a steal for Hanceville (2-4). Bellmon added 17 points and a steal. Izayah Glenon ended up with eight points and three rebounds. Brodie Malcom (two steals) and Cainon Moore (three rebounds) each added six points. Ben Johnson chipped in with five points and three rebounds, and Cornelius finished with four points. The Bulldogs will host Cullman next Monday.
For Cold Springs (2-4), Peppers finished with a game-high 25 points, four rebounds, and a steal. Calvert added 10 points and two steals. Hill ended up with eight points and a block. Kilgo chipped in with six points and five rebounds. Rice added five points and three rebounds. Seth Williams (steal) and Brodi Williams each chipped in with two points. The Eagles will head home to take on West Point next Tuesday.
