CULLMAN, Ala. – More than 450 women came out last week from the United Way of Cullman County (UWCC) Women United Designer Bag Bingo event. Those in attendance were asked to donate a gently used purse filled with personal hygiene items for women in need in the community.  On Tuesday, UWCC volunteers counted and sorted at least 2,500 personal care items from 500 handbags.

The personal care items included soap, shampoo, lotions, toothbrushes, razors, hair accessories, cosmetics and numerous other items. The donated items from the event will be distributed to shelter clients at Victim Services of Cullman, as well as other United Way partner agencies and local nonprofits that serve women and children.

UWCC Executive Director Becky Goff shared, “What a bounty they provided! These items came tucked inside 500 handbags, many with new tags, that not only were filled with the personal care items, but also note cards of encouragement and hand-written letters signed with scripture and prayers.”

She continued, “United Way and our community have been incredibly blessed by the ladies who attended the event and selected each item to donate. The message sent through these donations was clear to the women of our community: ‘We love you and we are here for you!’ Thank you to all the Women United who stand in the gap for our neighbors in need!”

Goff said the UWCC is already planning to host Designer Bag Bingo again next year.

“It’s scheduled for Nov. 10, 2020. Save the date!”
