WEST POINT, Ala. — The West Point Warriors hosted the Holly Pond Broncos to start out the 2019-20 season Tuesday night and both the girls’ and boys’ teams came out victorious. The Lady Warriors dominated the Lady Broncos from start to finish in their 78-41 win and the Warriors withstood an incredible shooting performance from Holly Pond’s Kyler Chaney to defeat the Broncos 79-69.

West Point’s girls started their season out strong as a great first half helped lead them to a dominating victory at home over Holly Pond.

Holly Pond scored the first points of the season on its opening possession, but it would be all West Point after that as the Lady Warriors scored 22 straight points to take a 27-6 lead into the second period and they increased the lead to 45-16 at the half. The score was 66-31 after three quarters and the final period ran under a hot clock as some more younger players got to play in the quarter. The Lady Warriors rolled to a 78-41 victory over the Lady Broncos.

Six different West Point players scored in double figures for the game and Brooke Brownfield led the way with 15 points. Ryleigh Jones added 12 points, Lexi Shadix, Micah Oldacre, and Molly Pendley each finished with 11 points and Miriam Oldacre ended up with 10 points. For Holly Pond, Tate Duke finished with 15 points.

The first period saw West Point’s Tyler White nail three shots from three-point range and despite 10 first-quarter points from Holly Pond’s Kyler Chaney, the Warriors held a 19-12 lead after one. Both teams lit it up from the field in the second period as Chaney added 11 more points and Jordan Allbright nailed three shots from beyond the arc himself to help keep Holly Pond in the game.

White scored five straight points to help stretch a 38-32 lead to 43-32, but Parker Sellers nailed a three from the right corner to make it a 43-35 game at the half.

An Allbright layup made it 44-37 early in the third quarter, but a Will Cochran three helped kick-start a 7-0 run as they pushed their lead to 51-37. Holly Pond couldn’t quite get out of the double-digit hole as the Warriors went into the final period up 58-46.

Back-to-back baskets by Samuel Wheeler helped stretch the lead to 65-49, but Chaney, who was held scoreless for the entire third period, went off, scoring eight in a row to make it a 65-57 game. However, that was as close as Holly Pond would get for the rest of the game as Kobe Bowers hit back-to-back treys late to help hold off another late rally by the Broncos. The Warriors start off the season 1-0 after their 79-69 victory over the Broncos.

Bowers finished with 19 points for West Point, Wheeler added 18 and White finished with 17. Bowers nailed five treys in the game while White added four. Aubry Cleghorn ended up with 11 points, while Will Cochran finished with nine. For Holly Pond, Chaney finished with a game-high 42 points, with half of those points coming in the final period, and Allbright added 11 points.

West Point will stay at home on Thursday night against Vinemont, while Holly Pond will travel to Randolph on Friday night.
