Obituary: Shirley Mae Smith Coleman

Funeral services for Shirley Mae Smith Coleman, age 79 of Cullman, will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Fairview United Methodist Church with Pastor Scott Hagood and Pastor Richard Saylor officiating; interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Coleman passed away on Monday, December 7, 2015 at her residence. She was born April 12, 1936 in Cullman to the late Homer and Bertie Lee Cronic Smith. She was a homemaker. She grew up on a Cullman County farm and lived her entire life within a few miles of her birthplace. She attended both East Point School and Cullman High School. During the 1950’s and 1960’s she worked at the Woodard’s Store in downtown Cullman. On December 23, 1957, she married Thomas D. “Bud” Coleman in Iuka, Mississippi. This marriage was blessed with one daughter.

She was a picture of the virtuous woman depicted in Proverbs 31. She was filled with wisdom, love and selflessness for her family. Her wish was to always do what she could to help them with any need she could supply.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Homer Lee Smith; and one sister, Tishie Harris.

Survivors include her daughter, Lesia Jane Coleman; a sister, Gay Nell (Clarence) Hartwig; sister-in-law and special friend, Doris Harris; sister-in-law, Sarah Fay Bailey; one aunt, Viola Cronic and family; nieces and nephews, David (Raquel) Harris, Dylan & Andrew Harris, Angie (Darren) Hinkle, Gene (Sheila) Marsh, Joyce (Ken) Sedlmayr, Jim (Rose) Marsh, JoAnn (Pat) Castles, Gary (Kay) Hartwig, Bob (Nadine) Hartwig, Cathy Magers, and Norman (Cheryl) Hartwig; her church family from Fairview United Methodist; special caregiver, Linda Twilley; and Cullman County Library family.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
