CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday evening issued the permit for the city’s upcoming Christmas in Cullman Parade and Tree Lighting to be held Friday, Nov. 22, 2019. The parade will begin at the intersection of First Avenue Southeast and Fifth Street Southeast near Busy Bee Café, and run north on First Avenue until it finishes at Depot Park. There the annual tree lighting will take place, along with live entertainment and a new “Santa’s Workshop” where kids can write letters to Santa and make ornaments. The city’s new Christmas Pyramid will also be included in the ceremonies and festivities.
The council also approved a permit for “Dickens-style” family Christmas caroling to take place this Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 in front of Finders Keepers antique shop at 201 First Ave. SW from 3:45-8 p.m., and a permit for Warehouse District merchants to have “Christmas in the Warehouse District” on First Avenue Northeast from Flavors Bakery to Lavish Boutique in the Warehouse District Nov. 8-10, 2019 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
While talking about city Christmas plans, Cullman Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Director Christy Turner announced that the department will have a “sneak-peek” lighting of the Christmas Pyramid this Friday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. The structure will be lit until Sunday. It will be relit again at the time of the Christmas Tree Lighting Nov. 22, and will remain lit through the season from that time.
The council also issued event permits for a statue unveiling at Art Park by Cullman Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism from 4-6 p.m. Nov. 14, and for a wedding at the Festhalle April 5, 2020.
Other council business
The council passed an ordinance to set the reinspection fee for commercial and residential buildings at $50.
Plan review fees for commercial buildings are as follows:
- Plans for new construction, major building alterations, and additions to buildings, the fee will be $150 dollars plus one dollar per thousand square feet over 5,000 square feet or fraction thereof
- Plans for any minor building alterations of two sheets or more, the fee will be $50.
The council also passed a resolution “to provide supplemental insurance covering critical illness plus cancer, accidental, short term disability, and hospital indemnity for city employees.”
In another resolution, the council authorized Mayor Woody Jacobs “to enter into an agreement with Benetech Administrators for services administering the City of Cullman’s employee cafeteria plan for insurance benefits, effective November 12, 2019.”
The Cullman City Council will meet next Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Cullman City Hall auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
