GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Good Hope City Hall turned into a fun and spooky destination Thursday afternoon as trick or treaters were welcomed by Mayor Jerry “Grim Reaper” Bartlett and other city employees. A steady flow of families stopped by for candy and to participate in this year’s costume contest.
Greg “Woody” Brown and Susan “Unicorn” Eller had cotton candy for all the visitors. A creepy girl named Christie Chamblee and her horrendous baby doll also helped welcome guests. Referee Maxie Jones and used broom salesman Terry Shabel passed out candy and offered “deluxe twin engine broom rides.”
As the kids kept arriving, it was clear that this year’s contest would be tough to judge. A couple of adorable flamingos and a giraffe dropped by, as well as Raggedy Ann, Hans Solo and even Beetlejuice in hopes of winning the $50 first-place prize. The judging will be tough, but the mayor and council members are used to making difficult decisions.
According to Councilman Jones, Thursday was at least the 12th year the City has hosted the Halloween event.
“This is always a fun event and we look forward to this every year,” he said.
This year’s fun was brought inside to the city hall basement so the cold weather had no chance of spoiling the fun.
