CULLMAN, Ala. – A frighteningly good time was had at the inaugural Cullman County CASA Trunk or Treat Tuesday evening.

Cullman County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Program Manager Candace Lingo shared, “This is our first trunk or treat. We have some community resources out here; we have DHR, Victim Services and our umbrella organization is Cullman Caring for Kids so they’re out here also and we’re just helping spread awareness of child abuse and different resources in the community for our children. And hopefully we’re giving the kids a safe place to have a little bit of fun tonight.”

CASA volunteers “are trained volunteers who are appointed by the juvenile court to recommend the best interest of a child/teen who has been abused and neglected. Our volunteers act as the voice to children and teens who otherwise would have none.”

For organizers of Tuesday night’s event, fun was on the agenda, along with education.

“Mainly awareness,” said Lingo, when asked what inspired the trunk or treat. “Obviously we’re a child advocate so we’re very kid-friendly, but we just wanted to spread awareness of what we are, what we do, how we do it and just have a fun night!”

Lingo felt positive about the evening, saying, “I think it’s going very well considering it’s our first year! We’ve had a very steady turnout ever since we started at 4:30. We’re always looking for volunteers, whether it’s someone to donate, whether it’s somebody to volunteer in our organization or to set up some type of fundraiser or event for us to help raise awareness for what we do.”
