ARLEY, Ala. — The Meek Tigers looked to win their regular season finale at home against the Lynn Bears Friday night, but Lynn was too much and pulled away in the second half to take the game 35-12.
The Bears struck first on their opening series as their running game wore out the Tiger defense and the drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown run, giving Lynn a 7-0 lead with 7:02 remaining in the opening period. Back-to-back punts gave the ball to Meek for its second series of the night and a pass interference penalty on third down gave the Tigers new life. Clark later picked up their first, first down of the game on a 6-yard run, but the drive stalled after that when Stuart Waldrep was sacked on fourth down.
Meek couldn’t find an answer for Lynn’s running attack as they went 63 yards and ended the drive with an 8-yard scoring run to make the score 14-0 Lynn at the half.
The Tigers went to more of a passing attack to start out the second half as Waldrep completed big passes to Bryson Hudson and Matthew Clark, plus Waldrep kept the drive alive with a key fourth-down run, but another fourth-down try later in the drive came up just short and put the ball back in Lynn’s hands.
The Bears found the end zone in just five plays on their next series and a 22-yard touchdown run made it 21-0. Meek was forced to punt on its next series, but it was blocked, and the Bears quickly found the end zone after that on a 29-yard run that increased the lead to 28-0. Waldrep was picked off on the next series and Lynn added a 16-yard score on the ground to make it 35-0.
Meek didn’t quit, and Waldrep found the end zone on just the second play of the next series on a 65-yard scamper down the home sideline to put the Tigers on the board and make it 35-6. They later added another touchdown when Waldrep found Trinton Ory for a 77-yard score, but it was too little, too late, and the Tigers wound up falling 35-12 to finish the 2019 season with an 0-10 record.
Waldrep finished 8-for-16 with 166 yards and a score, plus 61 more on the ground and a touchdown for Meek in his final game as a Tiger. Eight seniors saw the field for the last time for the Tigers Friday night and Meek will look to rebound with some good talent coming back in 2020.
