CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. – Two people are dead and 1 critically injured following a shooting at a residence along the 8500 block of County Road 223 in Cullman County Monday evening.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said in a statement, “On October 21st, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Cullman County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a 911 call from a residence on County Road 223 in the Prospect Mountain community.”

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said, “We located one person, a victim that was deceased. During the 911 call we received information that there (were) multiple victims here that had been stabbed or shot.”

Gentry said Cullman EMS transported the two injured parties to an area hospital, where one later died. He said the third victim is in intensive care.

“The coroner has confirmed that the second person has been deceased,” he said.

Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick confirmed the fatalities but has not identified the victims.

“A person of interest was developed in the early stages of the investigation,” the statement continued. “(The) CCSO determined the person of interest was fleeing up I-65 and coordinated with Alabama State Troopers (ALEA) and the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office.”

The person of interest, identified by the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office as Matthew LeWayne Clayton, is in custody on unrelated charges.

“We will be working all night here at this scene to identify any motives or the reason behind what happened here tonight with this crime scene,” said Gentry

He said all the individuals at the residence were familiar with each other.
