CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Museum was busy Monday and Tuesday as the city prepared for the start of Oktoberfest Wednesday. As Cullman begins the celebration of its German heritage, Museum Director Drew Green welcomed area school groups who learned about Cullman’s German history while on walking tours throughout the Warehouse District and Depot Park.
Students from Cullman Middle School and Sacred Heart were guided by exceptional story tellers who told students of the arrival of John Cullmann and the early days of the founder and his followers. Ben South, Michael Sullins, Julie Burks and Lesley Bearden Hyde were guides for this year’s history walks.
The different groups listened to Wolfgang and Nora Moritz, who provided fun German music during the tours. Despite the heat, the students still managed a celebratory “chicken dance.”
The kids learned about the Festhalle, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Cullman Train Depot and the many businesses, factories, parks, influential families and grand homes that once made up the landscape in early Cullman.
The students were very attentive, with one saying, “I thought I knew about Cullman, but I learned a lot.”
Student tours continue all week.
