CULLMAN, Ala. –  A Bessemer woman was arrested and a man remains on the run following a lengthy high-speed chase through Cullman and down Interstate 65 South Thursday night. It all started over an alleged shoplifting incident.

Tiffany Barry, 40, was charged with attempting to elude, according to Cullman Police Department (CPD) Lt. David Nassetta, who said Barry will most likely face charges of theft of property related to the shoplifting incident.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is still searching the Arkadelphia area for the man, identified by the CCSO as Dustin Dan Patterson.

In a statement, the CCSO said, “He is not believed to be dangerous…but we still urge citizens if they see him to call 911 or the CCSO at 256-735-2425.”

Patterson has multiple drug-related warrants and will also face charges from the CPD related to the chase.

CPD Chief Kenny Culpepper Thursday night said, “At around 6:30 p.m. officers responded to a report of shoplifting at Wal-Mart (on Olive Street in south Cullman). Officers attempted to stop them, but they fled.”

Culpepper said the pair led officers on a chase up U.S. Highway 31 through Cullman, all the way to Alabama Highway 157, where they turned toward the interstate.

“They did make contact with another vehicle during the chase,” said Culpepper, “but no one was injured.”

The vehicle exited onto I-65 South, and the CPD officers pursued it approximately 19 miles to Exit 291, where the pair exited toward Arkadelphia.

The CCSO joined in the pursuit on I-65.

“At some point, they (the suspects) blew a tire and were running on a rim,” said Culpepper. “They were forced to stop. The female was apprehended and the male ran off into the woods.”

A CCSO K-9 deputy was brought in to assist in the search for the male suspect.
