CULLMAN, Ala. – If you drive by Vincent Furniture in Cullman at night, you might notice a change in color. The lights were changed to blue in honor of police and first responders.

Store owner Betty Jo Vincent shared the reason behind the change.

“I just want everyone to know that I support our police officers. I’m proud they’re out there taking care of us every day. I just think every once in a while, they need to know they’re appreciated too,” she said. “I just want everybody to know that I do appreciate what they’re out there doing, and I think it would be wonderful if everybody let them know they’re appreciated. That’s my only motive, is just for them to know that they’re appreciated around here.”

Aside from showing appreciation, Vincent shared with a smile what inspired her to change her storefront lights.

“What inspired me? I don’t know, it just happened one day! All of a sudden, I knew I wanted to do it. I know we’ve done it once before and it’s just one of those things that when you want to do it, you want to do it. That was my only motive, that was my only reason. I just want them to know I appreciate them.”

Vincent has a message for police officers and first responders.

“I think the blue lights say it all, that I’m thankful they’re out there, I’m thankful the first responders are there, I’m thankful the police responders are there, I’m thankful they’re all out there joining forces to keep our town safe and a good place to live,” she said. “In my heart, I feel like that’s what my situation is, I just want them to know that I am thankful and that they’re all important to us. Without them, we couldn’t do anything, we wouldn’t be worth anything. I’d hate to know that I lived in a town that didn’t have police officers and rapid responders and I’m thankful that they’re out there. I just want everyone to know that I love our police officers. They’re not mean. I think they’ve earned their badges and I think that everyone should appreciate them.”

Vincent shared a quote she said touched her, saying, “When a police officer is killed, it’s not an agency that loses an officer, it’s an entire nation.”
