GARDEN CITY, Ala. – The Garden City town council had a light agenda but voted on several important items at its September meeting Monday night. Mayor Tim Eskew brought it to the council’s attention that the town received a letter from the Blount County Water Authority saying that the cost of operation is going up for the water authority. The current rate is the minimum of $21 per 2,000 gallons. The council then voted to increase the water rates all “across the board” by a dollar.

Eskew said “I think a dollar across the board on all of them (rates) will cover it.” Because of this vote, the council will have to amend the water rates for the FY 2020 budget. Maintenance Manager Eric Allred also noted for the council that water meters should be replaced soon around the town, and that it’s recommended to go with the same brand and type of meter for easy readings when readings need to be performed. The council took no action on the replacement of water meters.

The Council then discussed payroll projections for the FY 2020 budget. The Council voted to go into executive session to discuss “character” factors on the matter. After the council returned from executive session, Eskew asked, “On the raise, what is the wish of the council?” In response the council then voted for the payroll projection to be 3% for all town employees.

With nothing else on the agenda, the council adjourned. The Garden City town council meets on the third Monday of every month at 6 p.m.
