HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council Thursday night talked budgets and announced a major expansion at Birmingham Fastener. While there was no vote on the proposed $4.2 million city budget, action was taken on the $2.15 million capital investment by Birmingham Fastener.
The expansion at Birmingham Fastener is expected to bring 30 new jobs resulting in a $900,000 increase in payroll.
Mayor Kenneth Nail said, “I don’t know about y’all, but 30 new jobs in Hanceville, Alabama is a big deal to me.”
A larger announcement is being planned for a later date.
Birmingham Fastener asked the City for a 10-year property tax abatement with an exception of taxes earmarked for education. The amount Hanceville will not collect in property taxes in that 10-year period is $149,314.
Nail gave a list of benefits the City can expect from the expansion, including $79,896 in education funds over 10 years, $23,816 in annual additional tax revenue and $277,717 in local business revenue.
Birmingham Fastener is a manufacturer and distributor of fasteners for structural steel fabrication, metal building manufacturers, transportation, water works and utilities, original equipment manufacturers, agricultural manufacturers, construction and MRO. The Hanceville facility is a distribution center for the company.
The City of Hanceville’s FY2020 budget was discussed during the council’s work session. The proposed $4.2 million budget is an increase of nearly $150,000 from the 2019 budget. This was the first opportunity for the council members to see the budget and discuss any changes.
After expenditures, Hanceville’s FY2020 budget shows a net income of $108,550. The council will vote on the budget at its next meeting scheduled for Sept. 26.
In other business
The council voted to approve its Rebuild Alabama Act Transportation Plan. The transportation plan projects will be paid for in part by new revenue from Gov. Kay Ivey’s Rebuild Alabama Act, passed by the Alabama Legislature this year. Every year, counties and municipalities will be required to adopt a plan that clearly outlines how state transportation money from the new 10-cent fuel tax increase revenue will be spent. Hanceville voted to repave Greenbriar Drive with the $20,500 it is anticipating.
Only one bid was received by the City for the property on Wendy Street where the old water tower was located. The City accepted the bid from Faith Hammick for $5,100.
The Hanceville City Council’s next meeting is Sept. 26, 2019 at 6 p.m. A public hearing for Ordinance 629- Hanceville Nursing Home Property Rezoning will be held at that meeting. The council work session begins at 5:30 p.m. prior to the council meeting.
