ADDISON, Ala. – A packed house watched two longtime rivals, Addison and Winston County, face off at A.G. Hicks Stadium in Addison on Friday night. Addison was facing an undefeated, 2-0, Yellow Jacket team while Addison was coming off a turnover-plagued, close loss at #2 in 3A Piedmont.
Winston County won the toss and deferred, kicking off to Addison. After a quick three and out, Addison’s punter Eli Howse punted the ball and the ball came down striking a Winston County player in the back. Addison recovered at Winston’s 40-yard line and on the very next play, Addison quarterback Christian Roberts gave the ball back on a fumble. This would prove to be about the only bad thing that happened to Addison the rest of the game.
After a Winston punt, Addison took the ball from their own 47 and drove down to Winston’s 18. Facing a 4th and 1, Addison went for it and Grant Rice scampered 18 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was good and at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter, Addison led 8-0.
Two plays later, a Winston County fumble, which was recovered by Addison at the Winston County 40-yard line. After a beautiful Roberts to Luke Chambers 32-yard pass put the Dawgs in business at the Winston 8-yard line, Addison cashed in on a Chambers to Rice 8-yard shovel pass. The two-point conversion on a 2-yard run by Caleb Crider put the Dawgs up 16-0 with 2:51 left in the first quarter.
The first play after the kickoff resulted in another Winston County fumble. Addison drove inside Winston’s 3-yard line but failed to punch it in on a 4th down try on a solid defensive stand by the Yellow Jackets.
The quarter ended with Addison up 16-0.
In the second quarter, Addison added an 18-yard run from Rice. The two-point conversion was no good and Addison was coasting at 22-0. Addison defense continued to dominate holding Winston County’s All-State running back William Owens to minimal yards until he found a hole and ran 52 yards for the first Winston County score. The two-point conversion was good, and the score was cut to 22-8.
Winston forced an Addison punt and it looked like the momentum was with Winston County. That was until you know who, Grant Rice struck again, intercepting an errant Winston pass and returning it 29 yards to Winston’s 21-yard line. A few plays later Roberts cashed in from 8yards out and two-point conversion made the score Addison 30 – Winston County 8 at the half.
During the second half it was more of the same, with Roberts leading the Dogs down the field and scoring on a beautiful 30-yard run and at the 4:26 mark of the 3rd quarter, Addison led 36 to 8.
Winston’s next drive was their best drive of the game, coming on the legs of Bonds and Owens. Winston County drove 60 yards and scored on a 2-yard run by Bonds. The conversion was no good and the score was Addison 36, Winston County 14.
The fourth quarter ended with both teams letting their younger kids play, and the final tally was 36-14. Addison moves to 2-1 and travels to Red Bay next week.
Notable team stats:
Addison had 196 yards rushing and 70 yards passing for a total of 266. Winston had 112 yds rushing and 46 passing for a total of 158. The turnovers were a big difference with Winston committing four to Addison’s one.
Individual numbers were Roberts was 7comp-13att for 70 yds with 1td and no picks.
Roberts also rushed nine times for 59 yards and two scored. Caleb Crider had nine carries for 43 yards and Rice had four carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns.
Luke Chambers had two catches for 40 yards and Mr. Rice had two catches for 16 yards and a touchdown.
On defense Crider led the team with seven tackles, Justin Mather had six tackles, Luke Chambers had five tackles. Rice had an interception and the defense had three sacks, one each for Austin Bryson, Bailey Wilson and Jake Wilson.
Overall the team played well, still too many penalties but with two key players out due to injuries, possibly season ending, a win over your county rival is a good win.
