DOUBLE SPRINGS, Ala. – The Meek Tigers were hoping to bounce back with a win this week after falling at home to Cold Springs 25-0 to open the season, but Winston County had other plans. The Tigers and Yellow Jackets went back and forth in the opening half but in the final two periods, Winston County was able to pull away and send Meek home with its second loss of the season.
The Yellow Jackets went up 6-0 with the game’s first score late in the opening quarter but the Tigers answered with a score of their own that tied the game at 6 about midway through the second quarter. It looked like it would be a tied ball game at the half, but Winston County found the end zone with a minute reaming in the second quarter and the two-point conversion made it a 14-6 game at the break.
The Yellow Jackets scored with just over nine minutes in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 22-6 early in the second half but the Tigers didn’t lay down. Meek punched one in with just over eight minutes remaining in the quarter to cut it to 22-12 but Winston County was able to begin pulling away after that. The Yellow Jackets score with just over four minutes in the third to make it 30-12 and tacked on six more points after that to take a 38-12 lead into the fourth. The Tigers found the end zone one more time, but it was too little too late and Meek fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Tigers will be looking for their first win when they host South Lamar in a region game next week.
