HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Holly Pond Broncos played at home for the first time this year Friday night to host the Ider Hornets. The Broncos chose to receive the opening kick and started the game on their own 20-yard line. The first play from scrimmage saw Levi Boatright take a handoff from Kyler Chaney for 8 yards, but after the only first down of the first quarter Holly Pond punted the ball away.
Ider started on its own 31-yard line, but after being penalized 15 yards and a strong Broncos defensive stand, the Hornets lined up for a punt. The snap sailed over the punter’s head and the punter recovered the ball in the end zone, giving Holly Pond a safety and its only points in the first half.
The first half featured strong defense by both teams and two long punts. Holly Pond did manage three first downs while holding Ider to zero and Ider in the first half racked up 50 yards in penalties.
The second half had Ider’s Benjamin Kausen, a Denmark exchange student, scoring three times to lead the Hornets to victory. Kausen’s first score was a 48-yard field goal giving Ider its first lead with 6:49 left in the third.
The last of the third quarter scoring came when Ider intercepted a Bronco pass, setting up a Norman to Kausen 34-yard touchdown pass followed by a Kausen PAT.
The final score of the night came on a 45-yard Kausen interception for a touchdown with 1:34 left in the game that brought the score to 17-2.
The Broncos (0-2) played hard but came up short as they were unable to put together any sustained drives.
Holly Pond will look to regroup and bounce back next week when it travels to Midfield.
