VINEMONT, Ala. — Vinemont hosted the East Lawrence Eagles for the opening jamboree game, East Lawrence came away with a 10-7 victory in a hard-fought game. Costly turnovers and poorly timed penalties were the story of the night for Vinemont.
The junior varsity squads got things started off in the jamboree game. Vinemont went on offense first and after picking up a first down on just three plays, a fumble shut down the drive on the fourth play. The Vinemont defense stepped up and stopped East Lawrence on fourth down but four plays later, Vinemont coughed the ball up once again. The defense once again did its job stopping East Lawrence on fourth down. Vinemont ran the clock out in the first quarter and the JV teams ended with a 0-0 tie.
East Lawrence got the ball first as the varsity squads took the field. An incomplete pass ended the drive, but they got the ball back two plays later thanks to yet another fumble. Lucas Miller intercepted the ball and took it all the way down to the 13-yard line. After back to back penalties, Jack Hill found Teague Whatley for a 17-yard touchdown that put Vinemont up 7-0 with 4:34 remaining in the first half. Vinemont ended up turning the ball over once more in the half but managed to take a 7-0 led into the locker room.
After a Vinemont punt, East Lawrence tied the game, 7-7, thanks to a short run midway through the third quarter. Both teams swapped punts until a 25-yard field goal put East Lawrence up 10-7 with 6:17 remaining in the ball game. Vinemont ended up inside the 20 with under a minute to play with a chance to win the game, but that pesky turnover bug bit again and East Lawrence intercepted the pass in the endzone. A QB kneel was all that left to do for East Lawrence to come away with a 10-7 victory.
Vinemont will get the regular season underway next week when it travels to Falkville for a matchup against the Blue Devils.
