GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The City of Good Hope held its annual back-to-school event Thursday evening, and the community gathered at Good Hope Municipal Park to take part in the festivities, enjoying one of the last days of summer vacation.
Good Hope Mayor Jerry Bartlett said, “This is, we started this, I don’t know, maybe five or six years ago or more, it’s the Back-to-School Bash. We get all of our sponsors and they pay for all the activities and feed the whole community, you know everything’s free; the music’s free, bounce houses are free, it’s just a community give-back deal.”
The bash featured country artist Kyle Mercer and a football theme, with council members dressed as referees and the Good Hope High School football team tossing the pigskin with the kids. Also volunteering were the high school’s Student Government Association (SGA) while firefighters and EMTs from Logan, Loretto, Trimble, Bethsadia and Good Hope had vehicles on display.
Bartlett felt good about the evening; smiling, he said, “(Councilman) Greg Brown is the community service guy, that’s what I had for six years before I was promoted to mayor. We’ve got about seven or eight projects like the Christmas parade, 1,500 people we feed at Christmas, this being the Back-to-School Bash. You know, these are our community service projects that we do every single year. The parade, our parade and the Christmas in the Park, those type deals. We usually feed the community three or four times a year, and we don’t charge anything; our sponsors do it all. We really thank them for that. The sponsors give $1,000 and with that $1,000, we go out and do stuff like this.”
