BERLIN, Ala. – Berlin Mayor Patrick Bates this week gave the town council an update on the Town’s purchase of 20 acres beside the Berlin Community Center– land on which the council hopes to build a town hall in the future- and presented two annexation requests.

Bates told the council that closing on the property purchase will be soon, saying, “As soon as the title company completes their work, we’re set to close. That could be one day this week, or maybe the next week.”

The first annexation to consider was from Mark Lovelady, who, with his father-in-law, requested their property on the north side of U.S. Highway 278 be brought into the town limits.

“That’s the one piece of Lovelady Farms that had not yet come in,” said Bates. “Since that is on 278 there’s no road to take over.”

The second annexation to consider was from Ralph and Janice Laney, who requested their property along County Road 1621 be brought into the town limits.

The council suspended the rules for each, and both annexations were approved.

Bates informed the council there will be a few more annexations on the agenda next month.

In other business, Bates said he put half of the Town’s sales tax revenue toward the bond that was used to finance the 20-acre property purchase.

“Just to make it a little cleaner, I went ahead and rounded it up and made the bond payment $7,500,” Bates stated. “The sales tax check this month was for $14,990 and some change.”

The Berlin Town Council meets on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Berlin Community Center. The next regularly scheduled council meeting is July 15.
