VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Town Council and Mayor Reggie Dodson will take more time to discuss a proposed half-cent tax increase. The proposal, which was made at last month’s council meeting, would increase the town’s sales tax from 8.5% to 9%, with the extra money earmarked for Vinemont schools. Dodson, who Tuesday night said he is having second thoughts, asked the council for more time and consideration before putting the proposal to a vote.

Dodson said he spoke to a few of the retail shop owners in Vinemont and some had expressed concerns about how the increase might negatively affect their businesses.

“I’m not saying no, I’m just saying it’s something we have to justify in our minds before we make our decisions in this town,” Dodson said.

If the tax increase does eventually pass, the Town would have to wait 60 days before implementing it. Dodson said there’s time to look at the proposal more in depth as the tax would not be implemented until October if it did pass.

Dodson added, “We need to discuss this more than we have.”

The council did approve the purchase of a new 2019 Grasshopper mower for an estimated $14,000.

The Town has acquired a shaved ice machine from a community member. The town purchased the syrup and freezer needed to operate the machine and is now selling shaved ice at Vinemont’s baseball/softball complex. After the first two weekends, the council reported an estimated $900 in additional revenue. The mayor and council encourage everyone to stop by and enjoy a shaved ice on weekends during ball tournaments.
