Good Hope splits Thursday night matchups to open summer play

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Good Hope started out their summer schedule of games in Hanceville on Thursday as they took on Mortimer Jordan and Central-Florence. The Raiders pulled away in the second half to take game one over the Blue Devils 64-51 but fell to the Wildcats in game two in a very physical, low-scoring contest that saw Central-Florence come out on top 37-34.

Good Hope 64 – Mortimer Jordan 51

Good Hope jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead to start out the contest, but Mortimer Jordan went on a 17-5 run to take a 21-14 lead. Cole Maddox scored four in a row to make it a 21-18 game. After a three-point play by the Blue Devils made it 24-18, baskets by Dawton Farr and Cole Maddox cut it to 24-22. Drew Maddox hit a trey to make it a 29-27 score at the half. 

Drew Maddox started out the second half strong, scoring the first seven points for the Raiders to help them take a 34-31 lead but a 7-0 Blue Devil run gave them the lead right back at 38-34. Back-to-back baskets by Cole Maddox tied the game up at 38 and later on, Cole and Drew Maddox, along with Michael Lowe, helped jump-start a 9-0 run that gave Good Hope a 47-40 lead. The Raiders then started to pull away as a 12-2 run pushed the lead to double-figures at 59-42 and they went on to take the game 64-51. 

Cole Maddox finished the game with 27 points for Good Hope, followed closely by Drew Maddox, who added 23 points. Dawson Turner ended up with five points. 

Central-Florence 37 – Good Hope 34

Good Hope’s next contest came against Central-Florence and it was very physical from the opening tip. The Wildcats held a 10-7 lead in the first half, but the Raiders went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by six straight points from Cole Maddox and a Farr trey gave them a 16-10 lead, but Central-Florence ended up dominating after that. The Wildcats scored the final seven points of the half, five from the free-throw line, to take a 17-16 lead at the break.

Cole Maddox put up the first five points of the second half to give the Raiders a 21-17 advantage. After Lowe hit a basket and a pair of free throws to make it 25-22, the Wildcats put up five in a row to give them a 27-25 lead and later stretched their lead to 32-27.

A three-point play by Cole Maddox cut it to 32-30. Three free throws by Central-Florence made it 35-30, then a Lowe layup, later followed by a pair of Cole Maddox shots at the line, made it a 35-34 game. After the Wildcats hit a pair from the charity stripe, the Raiders had multiple opportunities to try and tie the game up, but they couldn’t get the shots to fall and wound up losing the game 37-34.

Cole Maddox finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, a steal, and a block for Good Hope. Lowe added 11 points, and Farr ended up with three points, a steal, and a block. Drew Maddox added three rebounds and four steals in the contest. The Raiders will continue their summer schedule on Friday night when they play Collinsville at 5:00, Deshler at 7:30 and finish the night against Red Bay at 8:30.
