WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Town Council voted this week to help the West Point High School Future Farmers Association (FFA) with their upcoming Cattle and Sheep Show. The event will be held at the Cullman County Fairgrounds July 5-6. The council unanimously agreed to give the organization a $1,000 sponsorship to help with the show.
In other business, Grady Parsons from Living Water Services updated the council on the town’s water and sewer systems. The latest Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) report for the 2018 calendar year showed that the West Point water and sewer system is in great shape despite the plant’s age.
Parsons explained that low scores are the goal, adding, “This is a very, very good report. Of the ones we do in the state this is just about as a low a score as we’ve got.”
The score for water quality was excellent.
Discussions and planning continue in hopes of repaving County Road 1141. The Town has applied for a grant and has gathered quotes for the project. Due to the benefit the repaving will have for the schools. Mayor Gerald Schafer has advocated for the repaving by meeting with Commissioner Garry Marchman and said he hopes to speak to Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman soon.
Schafer also discussed adding rumble strips in front of the school near the crosswalks. The Town is also applying for a Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) grant for paving around its storm shelter.
