HANCEVILLE, Ala. – This Saturday, May 18, the Veteran Farmers Conference will take place at Wallace State Community College. Sponsored by The Alabama Mountains, Rivers & Valleys Resource Conservation & Development Council, the conference will offer military veterans, active duty and reserve personnel an opportunity to learn more about therapeutic farming and sustainable agriculture.

The conference will introduce participants to therapeutic farming to address PTSD, financial and technical assistance programs for small farmers, and sustainable small farming techniques and practices.

In addition to presentations about farming projects and getting help from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about Veterans Affairs and programs to assist victims of PTSD, and will get to network with other veterans who have similar experiences and interests.

Alabama Mountains, Rivers & Valleys Resource Conservation & Development Council Executive Director Mike Roden told The Tribune, “This is a whole team effort to honor our military veterans and active duty service men and women. Our purpose is twofold.  One is to educate military veteran farmers on farm practices and assistance that is available to them to improve their effectiveness and protect the natural resources.  Secondly, we are building a network of existing veteran farmers that will allow returning veterans to do some hands-on work/therapy on their farms. This is especially important for those returning with post-traumatic stress disorder and other injuries.”
