HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville High School senior Alex Campbell was recently named the Cullman County Student of the Year by the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce. He was recognized at the Chamber’s State of Our Communities event. He also received a scholarship from the Wallace State Community College Future Foundation.

The Student of the Year is selected from all Cullman-area seniors after a review of submitted applications. Campbell pointed out that he is the first student from Hanceville to win the award since 1995.

Hanceville High School Principal Jimmy Collins had nothing but praise for Campbell, saying, “He’s a smart, athletic, friendly, well-rounded kid. He scored very high on his ACT, he’s got a plan and a great personality to go with it.”

Assistant Principal Brent Bartlett added, “He’s a genuinely great kid. He is a friend to everyone and works hard at everything he does. He helps everyone, including the younger kids. He is incredibly smart, athletically gifted, as well as (having) an outgoing personality. Even when faced with obstacles, he has fought through them.”

Campbell is a member of the Hanceville High School Math Team, SGA, president of his senior class and plays football, baseball and basketball for the Bulldogs. He’s also helped organize different fundraisers, projects and school events.

He laughed, “One time we had this bake sale during a basketball game. I was on the basketball team, but I had broken my shoulder so I was just going to sit on the bench anyways. Everybody was in the stands watching the game. It was a big game and nobody wanted to sit there and work the bake sale so I was working the bake sale with my arm in this sling while the game was happening behind me.”

Campbell was chosen by his school as Mr. Hanceville High School 2019 and helped organize his class prom at Brick Haven.

Campbell praised teacher Dana Lisle, sharing, “She’s kind of been with me since I started high school because she’s over the math team. We won state last year. Since I got in high school and met Ms. Lisle, I’ve been talking to her, and when I didn’t have her in ninth grade, I was still talking to her a lot because of the math team practices. When I actually had her in 10th grade and 11th grade, she’s just been a good influence. A positive influence.”

He added, “Also Ms. Rachel Cone. She teaches here. She’s an English teacher. She is just good. I’m not the biggest English fan. I’m more of a numbers type of guy, but I liked English class with Ms. Cone.”

Campbell earned $73,000 in scholarships and will be headed to The University of North Alabama in the fall.

Smiled Campbell, “I’m thinking about doing some type of medical engineering or chemical engineering. Just some type of engineering because I like math and I like to problem solve. So, I figure that would be good for me. Also, I like the medical field, being able to help and take care of people so that just brings it all together.”

As for sports, he added, “I am going to try to play baseball. I’m going to try out when I get up there and hopefully walk on.”

Campbell is the son of Paul and Andin Campbell and has two younger siblings, Cassidy and Zachary.
