CULLMAN, Ala. – After the Cullman County Commission voted to enact a half cent sales tax increase on March 12, local businesses began preparing their computerized cash registers for the change; after the Commission repealed the tax on April 23, some of those businesses apparently didn’t get the message. Shoppers have reported that a few area retailers are charging the extra half percent, despite the repeal, so folks are encouraged to check their receipts when making purchases.
The sales tax in unincorporated areas of Cullman County is 8.5%, and it’s 9% in incorporated municipalities. According to Cullman County Commissioner Garry Marchman, businesses have been notified about the repeal, and some have not been able to correct the amounts, yet. Some corporate franchise businesses like Wal-Mart and others may have to get authorization from central offices in other states before they can make the change.
Marchman assured, “One thing that I wanted to let people know is that businesses–local businesses–are working on that. So, if they go into a business and they do see (an incorrect) charge to their tax, they can go back later, and I feel like all the businesses will be more than willing to take their receipt back, and they will be more than willing to give them their money back on the taxes.
“Be patient with the local businesses. It was something that we put in place, and now it was a change, and the businesses had already prepared to do it, so now they’re having to go back and change again.”
The new tax was set to go into effect May 1.
