CULLMAN, Ala. – The crawfish were fresh and the weather was perfect for the United Way of Cullman County’s (UWCC) Crawfish Boil Saturday at Goat Island Brewing. The doors were up and people enjoyed the mudbugs that were brought from south Alabama that morning. The Crawfish Boil is one of UWCC’s largest fundraisers and is organized by its Young Professionals Board (YPB).

“We had record-breaking attendance again this year and we had so many volunteers here to help tonight, too. It was just unbelievable. Such a great group of young professionals that work hard for the United Way and I couldn’t do any of this without their help,” said UWCC Executive Director Becky Goff. “The Brickmasons have been a great addition to this year’s lineup. They are from north Shelby County. We have loved their music all night long. We’ve been rockin’ all day!”

Volunteers from the different agencies under the United Way umbrella were on-hand to help with the first major fundraiser of the year.

“It just keeps getting bigger every year and we are just thankful to the community that came out to support us,” Goff said.

Besides the great live music, Goat Island had the backroom set up with folks playing cornhole. The brewery was packed with folks loving the crawfish and enjoying the cold beer. Some brought their dogs and just enjoyed a laid-back and fun afternoon. More than 300 tickets were sold for the party.

A group of volunteers got up early Saturday morning and drove to around Mobile to bring back fresh crawfish that were prepared by Freddie Day Catering. Other volunteers were busy chopping vegetables and getting everything set up for the day’s festivities.

YPB Chair Jennifer Parker and YPB Liaison Lora Gilliland were serving up the crawfish and having a great time. Gilliland explained that many of the volunteers visited the Strawberry Festival in downtown Cullman and passed out crawfish beads and info about the Crawfish Boil. She felt that many took a break from the festival to come out and have a good time.
