PREP SOFTBALL: Au, West hit walk-offs for Cullman, Cold Springs; Cullman Pre-State Blowout wrap-up

CULLMAN, Ala. – Good Hope, Cold Springs and Cullman were all back in action for bracket play at this year’s Cullman Pre-State Blowout and after advancing past round one, all three fell in round two to end their tournament runs. A walk-off single from Taylor Au lifted Cullman over Oxford 4-3 but the Lady Bearcats were eliminated by Hayden in round two. Toni West blasted a walk-off grand slam for Cold Springs in its win over West Limestone but later fell to New Hope and after shutting out Southside in round one, Good Hope fell to Hazel Green in round two.

Cullman 3 – Oxford 2

The Lady Bearcats went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Alex Stansell and she collected her second RBI single of the game in the third to stretch the lead to 2-0. After a pair of scoreless innings, Oxford scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game, but Taylor Au walked it off with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give Cullman the 3-2 win.

Stansell (two hits) led the way with two RBIs and Faith Guest and Savannah Davis each finished with a pair of hits in the win as well.

Hayden 15 – Cullman 4

Hayden started the game out very strong, putting up eight runs in the opening inning and the Lady Bearcats didn’t rebound from the early deficit, falling 15-4. 

Davis finished with a pair of hits, two RBIs, and a run scored for Cullman. Kline (run scored) and Shana Guest each added a hit and an RBI, while Heatherly chipped in with a hit. The Lady Bearcats will take on Decatur in the Class 6A, Area 14 tournament at Hartselle next Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Good Hope 4 – Southside 0

Good Hope put up two runs in the second and third inning, and Abby Hunt pitched a four-hit shutout as the Lady Raiders defeated Southside 4-0.

Bailey Swann finished with a pair of hits, an RBI and two runs scored for Good Hope. Kailee Shikle added a hit and an RBI. Rebecca Norris and Hunt chipped in with an RBI, while Jacqueline Hays and Skylar Tucker (run scored) each added a hit. 

Hazel Green 8 – Good Hope 4

Good Hope faced an early 4-0 deficit after three innings, but they cut it to 4-3 in the top of the fourth. Hazel Green countered in their half of the inning however by putting up four runs and the Lady Raiders wound up falling 8-4.

Abby Hunt finished with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored for Good Hope. Kailee Shikle added a hit and two RBIs. Angelina Flanigan and Bailey Swann each finished with a hit and a run scored. The Lady Raiders will host the Class 4A, Area 12 tournament and will take on Fairview next Monday at 2 p.m.

Cold Springs 9 – West Limestone 5 

Cold Springs took a 5-1 lead going into the fourth inning, but they couldn’t hold the lead as West Limestone tied it up with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. However, the Lady Eagled wound up taking the game 9-5 in dramatic fashion thanks to a Toni West walk-off grand slam.

Emily Williams finished with three hits and four RBIs for Cold Springs. West added a pair of hits, including the game-winning grand slam, four RBIs, and a run scored. Morgan Chasteen ended up with three hits, an RBI and three runs scored. A.K. Voce added a pair of hits and two runs scored. Emma Black finished with a pair of hits, while Crimson Gann and Lacey Rice each chipped in with a hit of their own.

New Hope 5 – Cold Springs 2

Cold Springs held a 2-1 lead after two innings, but New Hope put up four runs in the next three innings, and the Lady Eagles wound up losing, 5-2.

Voce finished with a hit and an RBI for Cold Springs. Hayden Goodwin added an RBI. Gann (two hits) and Kyla Aaron (one hit) each scored a run, while Black, Rice, and West each added a hit in the game. The Lady Eagles will take on Sumiton Christian in the Class 2A, Area 11 tournament at Sulligent next Tuesday at 3 p.m.
