CULLMAN, Ala. – It’s almost area tournament time for local teams as each one looks to make some noise and hopefully, host a playoff game. Tournaments will get underway on the 29th and the 30th next week. Below is a preview for each team.
Class 1A, Area 12
The no. 3 seed, Meek, will look to advance to the next round of the area tournament when they take on second-seeded Decatur Heritage April 30th at 11 a.m. at Falkville High School. The Lady Tigers took their first meeting of the season 6-4 while the Lady Lions took the second meeting 5-2. Meek’s bats need to come alive and their pitching has to be on point if they want to advance to the next round.
Class 2A, Area 11
The Cold Springs Lady Eagles will be the no. 3 seed in its area tournament and will take on the no. 2 seed, Sumiton Christian, next Tuesday at 3 p.m. The winner will advance to take on the host, Sulligent, later that day at 5 p.m. Cold Springs has dropped both games to the Lady Eagles by scores of 11-0 and 13-2. If they hope to advance to the next round, they’ll look to cool off a very hot Sumiton Christian team and will look to get a solid performance from their starters.
Class 2A, Area 12
The no. 2 seed, Addison, will take on the no. 3 seed, Winston County, next Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Hatton. The Lady Bulldogs dropped their only meeting to the Lady Yellow Jackets, 8-5, and will look to avoid going into the losers’ bracket game. If Addison wants to advance to the next round, they’ll have to get solid performances from their pitching staff and their offense.
Class 3A, Area 12
Hanceville will be the no. 4 seed in the tournament and will take on the host, J.B. Pennington, April 30th at 1 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs dropped both games earlier this season 13-3 and 7-0 and will look to keep their season alive in their latest matchup against the Lady Tigers. In order for Hanceville to advance to the next round and pull off the upset, they have to find a way to cool off a very hot J.B. Pennington offense and find a way to get runs on the board themselves.
Class 3A, Area 13
The no. 2 seed, Holly Pond, will take on the no. 3 seed, Vinemont, on the 29th at 4 p.m. at New Hope High School and will take on the winner of the New Hope v. Brindlee Mountain matchup on the 30th at 4 p.m. The Lady Broncos took two of three meetings against the Lady Eagles, with Vinemont taking their last meeting 5-4 at home. Each team will be bringing their A-game from start to finish in hopes of advancing to the next round.
Class 4A, Area 12
Good Hope finished with a perfect record in area play and earned the right to host its area tournament next week. The Lady Raiders will take on the no. 4 seed, Fairview, next Monday at 4 p.m. Good Hope finished 3-0 on the season against the Lady Aggies by a combined score of 19-1. The Lady Raiders rely on a powerful offense and some great pitching to advance to the next round while the Lady Aggies have some great talent of their own and will look for a huge upset in the opening round of the tournament.
Class 5A, Area 14
West Point will be the no. 3 seed in its area tournament and will take on the no. 2 seed, Guntersville, next Monday at 3:45 at Brewer High School. The Lady Warriors dropped both of their earlier matchups against Guntersville by scores of 7-6 and 12-2. If they hope to move on to the next round, they will look for a big game out of their offense and will also look to get a huge pitching performance from Carlie Wilkins.
Class 6A, Area 14
Cullman will be the no. 3 seed in its area tournament and will take on the no. 2 seed, Decatur, on the 30th at 4 p.m. and the Lady Bearcats will be trying to advance to take on the host, Hartselle, later that day at 6 p.m. Cullman dropped both games against the Lady Red Raiders earlier in the season 7-2 and 14-3. The keys for the Lady Bearcats will be getting some great pitching and some solid hitting from their whole lineup and if Cullman can do all of that, they will give themselves a great chance to move on to the next round.
