CULLMAN, Ala. – Two student teams from the Building Construction program at the Cullman Area Technology Academy (CATA) last week brought home honors from the Alabama SkillsUSA 2019 State Championships.

CATA Building Construction teacher and SkillsUSA team sponsor Mike Burkett shared that Fairview High students Payton Oden, Trevor Cheatham and Nate Borem won the state championship in community service for the second year in a row, this time for the construction of a pergola at Harmony School that required them to give up part of their Thanksgiving break last November.  (See The Tribune’s story at https://www.cullmantribune.com/2018/11/22/helping-hands-cata-construction-students-spend-thanksgiving-break-on-building-project-at-harmony-school/).

Burkett said of his students, “They did an awesome job!”

Additionally, a team comprised of Simon Reza, Dusty Burney and Jacob Ryder were state SkillsUSA runners-up for its development of a CNC woodworking business within the CATA Building Construction Program.

Burkett said, “They did a full-blown business and marketing plan along with the display shown.  All three students hope to start and own their own businesses one day. Great students!”
