CULLMAN – The Cullman County Farmers Market has remained a local tradition for 30 years. This year, farmers have again populated their stands with fresh fruits and vegetables.
From the end of May until October, area farmers paint the open field with a variety of fresh produce such as tomatoes, beans, watermelon, cucumbers, corn, squash, okra, and cantaloupe.
Farmer Larry Clark from Simcoe, Ala., stated, “I’ve been raising stuff for the public for eight years. I plant the usual; corn, peas, potatoes, squash, okra, what everybody likes. It normally lasts through August. Everybody come out to visit, we have some fresh stuff. Everything is grown local. We’d like for you to come participate. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are my normal days, but sometimes things come in quicker than you think, and you need to bring it.”
Jan Harbison, another local farmer, has been bringing her vegetables to the Farmers Market for over 20 years. Harbison also oversees the Market and makes sure the grounds are kept clean.
The Market's ever-changing selection of fresh produce encourages Cullman County residents to visit regularly while also directly supporting local growers. The Market charges each farmer $10 per day, paid on site, to help fund the area's upkeep.
The Cullman County Farmers Market is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and located at 541 2nd Ave NE, Cullman, Alabama 35055.
