CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman’s VFW Post 2214 held its Rock-a-Thon Saturday morning to cap off this week’s yard sale and the event was another success for the Auxiliary. The yard sale kicked off on Thursday and will conclude today at 3 p.m. but the Rock-a-Thon got underway early Saturday morning when the crowd began pouring in. The yard sale was packed with items ranging from books, toys and tools to clothes, furniture and bedding and much more.

Ladies’ Auxiliary President Dee Harris is happy to report a very successful week with the yard sale and an even better Saturday morning with the Rock-a-Thon. Harris and others filled the rocking chairs and accepted donations that go towards supporting the post and veterans.

“We’ve had a very good week and we’re very pleased. Our Rock-a-Thon has been a fantastic success. We can’t run a marathon obviously,” Harris joked. “But we can Rock-a-Thon, so we take turns going up there and sitting down and rocking and we collect donations beforehand.”

Harris also talked about one of the themes for the event and the post this year, Rosie the Riveter. Some Auxiliary members dressed as the iconic character for the event and Harris elaborated on the character’s history.

“Rosie the Riveter is all the civilian women during World War II who went to work at Boeing and the rubber plants and all the kind of stuff when their husbands or boyfriends went to war,” Harris said. “It’s all the women that worked in the states living off rationing stamps and did the jobs of men like building airplanes and making bullets and all that stuff and they called her Rosie the Riveter because they riveted the airplanes together. She’s kind of like our logo this year and our motto is ‘We can do it’.”

This year’s theme seems to be working for them so far and Harris is shooting for an even better turnout next year.
