ORLANDO, Fla. – Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) recognized Dr. Vicki Karolewics, president of Wallace State Community College, with the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction during PTK Catalyst 2019, at the Society’s annual convention, in Orlando, Florida last week.

This award is given to college presidents who have shown strong support of student success on their campus by recognizing academic achievement, leadership and service among high-achieving students at their colleges. Recipients are nominated by students on their campus and are only eligible to receive the award once over the course of their career.

Wallace State’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter nominated Karolewics for her record on student success and outstanding support of the organization.

“I am very grateful to our students for having nominated me for this prestigious award. It is the most meaningful because of their nomination,” said Karolewics.

Wallace State’s PTK has achieved Five-Star status, the Society’s highest achievement. Wallace State PTK members Challie Johnson, Garrett Johnson, Jon Elliott, Jordan Freeman, Meredith Calvert and Emily Dia, along with sponsors Brandon Smith and Stacey Sivley, attended the convention and were present at the awards ceremony.

The Shirley B. Gordon Award is Phi Theta Kappa’s most prestigious award for community college presidents and is named in honor of the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, Phi Theta Kappa’s longest-serving Board of Directors Chair and a founder and long-time president of Highline Community College in Washington. Of more than 1,100 community college presidents, 15 were chosen to receive the award this year.

Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members in 10 nations.
