CULLMAN, Ala. –  The Cullman Police Department (CPD) on Wednesday named the two suspects arrested in connection with the March 1, 2019 robbery of the Woodforest National Bank inside the Wal-Mart on Olive Street in Cullman. The CPD first reported the pair’s arrest on March 14, but said Wednesday the initial arrests were for attempted robberies in Mississippi.

According to CPD Sgt. Intae Suh, on March 12, Charles B. Richey, 32, and Russell J. Shelton, 50, both of Bowling Green, Kentucky, attempted to rob a Woodforest National Bank in Clinton, Mississippi but were unsuccessful.  The pair then traveled to Meridian, Mississippi and attempted to rob another Woodforest National Bank.

“They were unsuccessful again, due to the quick response of parties involved getting an alert with the description of Mr. Richey out to surrounding agencies and bank branches,” said Suh. “He was apprehended by the Meridian Police Department during the attempted robbery.  Mr. Shelton was apprehended in Kentucky after he left the area in Meridian, Mississippi when Mr. Richey was arrested.”

Suh said both suspects are currently being held in Meridian on robbery charges.  He said warrants have been issued for both suspects for the bank robbery that occurred in Cullman on March 1.

“I would like to thank the multiple agencies involved in their arrests as well as citizens involved.  Due to the cooperation of federal, state and local agencies, the suspects were quickly apprehended without incident,” shared Suh.

In the Cullman robbery, one suspect claimed to have a weapon and demanded money. He fled through the garden center and got away in a waiting sedan, driven by the second suspect. No one was injured.
