CULLMAN – Bench Back Billboards is a Cullman-based company that provides advertising space to local businesses wanting to get their name out in front of the community.
Terry Bagley has owned Bench Back Billboards since 1999. Mr. Bagley acquired the company after he and his family moved to Cullman.
About three months ago, Mr. Bagley’s daughter, Callie Bagley, took over the business.
She said that her father put less and less effort into the company because he considered it a side business that became a little bit too much to handle.
Ms. Bagley is trying to revitalize Bench Back Billboards. Her current goal is to utilize each of the company's existing benches. The cost for using Bench Back Billboards is $3 a day after production costs.
“The starting fee is $100,” Bagley said. “But that is only if you go through us to make your sign. If you chose to have your sign made by someone else and then put your billboard on one of our benches, then you just have to pay for the cost of having the sign on a bench.”
Bagley said that businesses can choose to pay for three months, six months, or 12 months, “and if you choose six or 12 months, you get a reduction.”
Along with typical business matters, Bagley also deals with an unusual obstacle.
“The city breaks our benches constantly,” she said. “If they’re ever doing any work around our bench, they’ll literally just break it and move it.”
This is inconvenient for the business because, according to Bagley, each bench costs $350 to construct.
Bagley is working to grow the footprint of Bench Back Billboards, and, if her vision comes to fruition, there soon will be sponsored benches spread across Cullman.
