VINEMONT, Ala. – The Town of South Vinemont on Tuesday night declared a state of emergency ahead of more flooding rains. The City of Hanceville did the same on Monday.
Vinemont Mayor Radginal Dodson and the town council have voted on the decision Tuesday night, saying the town experienced flooding back during Christmas 2015 and they want to be prepared.
Said Dodson, “The situation we’ve got in front of us is emergency conditions in the town of South Vinemont. Should we end up with damage to, in or around the town, where as with this storm that’s to be in here for the next four days, if FEMA declares that we need to have an emergency situation where they come in to help with clean up or such or if we need them, we need to have these emergency situations in place before they get here rather than having this done (next) Monday."
Dodson continued, "Therefore, it is hereby proclaimed that emergency conditions exist throughout the town of South Vinemont warranting the exercise of emergency powers as provided by law and the activation of the town of South Vinemont, Cullman County emergency operations plan and its appropriate annexes."
The three floodplains are the area in and around the town’s community center, the area around the town’s ball fields, and an area off U.S. Highway 31 around and near the red and white water tower. The town’s community center flooded in 2015 and is of the greatest concern. The mayor and others have been checking on the center throughout the day.
