CULLMAN – The 23rd annual Big Band Dance took place Friday night at the Cullman Civic Center; it was a snazzy evening, with attendees of all ages dancing along as the Cullman High School Jazz Band played the night away.

Attendance varies year by year, but Cullman Band Booster President Leeanna Smith said Friday night she estimated 450 dancers showed up this year, of all ages.

Said Smith, “It’s a successful community event with the assistance of generous businesses to make the event possible.”

CHS Director of Bands (and Leanna Smith’s husband) Christopher Smith said he felt the evening went well, sharing, “It was a great evening for the community to come out and spend the night together dancing to some live music provided by great musicians from Cullman High School.”

He continued, “I’m really appreciative of the community’s support of this event and look forward to next year’s Big Band Dance.”

Smiled Leanna Smith, “I think it was a great success and we didn’t run out of food.”

She said more than $3,000 was raised from the event; the money will go toward equipment for the CHS Jazz Band.

The Big Band Dance, started as a fundraiser/showcase by former CHS Band Director Garry Taylor more than 20 years ago, has grown larger every year.
