CULLMAN – “Lulu became famous,” smiled Judy Nelms, owner of It’s my Party in Cullman, while discussing her alter-ago, Lulu the Gorilla in the Pink Tutu. Nelms has done singing telegrams as Lulu for the past 16 years.

Nelms humorously shared some of her craziest moments as Lulu, including stopping a wedding ceremony (to tease a groom) and interrupting court to deliver a “Happy Birthday” to a clerk of court.

Nelms moved to Cullman 24 years ago, attended Wallace State Community College, and then started working part-time at It’s My Party.

“I fell in love with it the first week that I worked here,” said Nelms, who is passionate about her job.

After about a year, the previous owner decided to sell the business. Nelms bought the store, and soon after, she began doing singing telegrams. Before Lulu, Nelms’ cast of characters included Chloe the Clown, Henrietta the Chicken and Dedra Death.

“Then Lulu came in the picture!” said Nelms, “I just love doing Lulu; she’s my alter-ego.”

Lulu the Gorilla in the Pink Tutu’s singing telegrams can be arranged for anniversaries, birthdays and Valentine’s Day. For Valentine’s Day, Lulu sings “You are My Sunshine,” recites a funny poem and leaves a bouquet of balloons. Other deliveries can also be accommodated. Lulu will go anywhere in the county (even out of county), but stays inside Cullman County on Valentine’s Day.

Nelms said she will also accept orders for Valentine’s grams the week of Valentine’s Day.

“I will make sure it will be a Valentine’s they remember!” Nelms said with a smile.

To make arrangements with Lulu, contact Nelms at 256-739-6269 or 256-962-2441 any time during Monday through Saturday.

It’s My Party is located at 205 Second Ave. SE.
