CULLMAN – The Cullman City Public Library is starting up its annual Summer Program in June.
The program has served the children of the city “since at least 1964,” according to Cullman librarian, Sharon Townson.
The theme of this year’s program is “Every Hero Has a Story,” and will feature various heroes from around the Cullman community, including police officers and electric company workers.
“The goal of the program is to keep the children reading throughout the summer so that they do not lose all of the reading skills they developed the previous school year,” said Townson about the program.
With over 4,000 children participating in library programs throughout the year, Townson estimates that about a quarter of that number comes from the participation in the Summer Program.
The program is free to attend and is based around elementary aged children.

Although the program is held at a library, the events are not necessarily reading or book-centered. Instead they are meant to focus on the special guest. After that the leaders of the program relate the theme of the program back to reading.
“This is not a book club,” Townson stressed to explain, “But we try to help the kids find books that they are interested in reading individually.”
