CULLMAN – A full house of family and friends was treated to a pre-grand opening event at Cullman’s Rock N Roll Sushi Tuesday evening. The restaurant, located at 1900 Marktplatz Center (in the unit formerly home to First Community Bank) officially opens to the public today, Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m.
The owners of the Cullman franchise are Lee and Brooke Black and Keith and Tina Al-Dijaili.
“We had a really great turnout and things have run smoothly,” said General Manager Kelsey Moore, smiling. “Everyone has been very accommodating to our newness.”
There was a brief wait, but the use of a texting system allowed guests to enjoy one of Rock N Roll Sushi’s signature Rocktails or a Goat Island draft beer on the heated patio while waiting to be seated.
People were reminded of MTV’s glory days as classic videos from Van Halen, Dokken, the Black Crowes, Temple of the Dog and other classics played on the many big screens.
Keith Al-Dijaili observed, “People have been singing along and looking at all the amazing artwork and guitars. Everyone seems to be enjoying everything.” After a busy night he also joked, “Our feet hurt, but that’s OK.”
Those who aren’t sushi eaters were not deterred from coming to check out the hibachi and other items from the grill.
Owner Brooke Black said, “So far it’s been about 3 to 1, hibachi orders to sushi orders. The grill has been very busy.”
The diverse menu really does have something for everyone, and it’s not bad to look at, either. The menus are a collection of classic album covers with the menu printed inside for an additional nostalgic touch.
Local connection
Rock N Roll Sushi has many local ties. The Blacks are from Holly Pond and the Al-Dijailis from Cullman. Cullman native Joe Ragsdale owns the franchise group. Rock N Roll Sushi was founded in Mobile in 2010 by Lance Hallmark and Gerri Mach-Hallmark.
