WEST POINT – The Hartselle Tigers traveled to West Point for a pair of matchups with the Warriors and Lady Warriors Tuesday night and Hartselle was able to leave with a pair of wins. The Lady Warriors fell just short 42-34 and the Tigers were able to pull away from the Warriors 94-68.
Hartselle 42 – (18-4) West Point 34 (varsity girls)
It was a battle of two great defenses in this game and it showed early on as the Lady Warriors held a slim 5-4 lead. They stretched it to 10-4 on a layup by Mackenzie Carter and a trey by Miriam Oldacre, but the Lady Tigers finished the quarter strong, scoring the final seven points to take an 11-10 lead into the second period.
Hartselle made it 20-12 in the second quarter behind some sloppy passing from West Point, but the Lady Warriors' defense kept West Point in the game and kept it a 20-15 game in a half that featured just seven fouls.
The third period featured some sloppy play by both sides, but both defenses continued their stellar play. West Point found itself trailing 29-22 going into the final period.
The Lady Warriors made a push to start out the quarter as they hit four of their six shots from the line to make it a 29-26 contest. Lexi Shadix hit a huge three from the left wing to cut the deficit to just two at 33-31 with 3:38 to go in the game, but the Lady Warriors never got any closer after that as turnovers plagued West Point for the remainder of the contest.
Shadix led the way for West Point with 13 points, eight rebounds, a steal and a block. Miriam Oldacre added 10 points, four rebounds and a steal. Carter ended up with 10 points as well, along with seven points and a pair of steals, and Maci Hamby chipped in with a point. The Lady Warriors will look to rebound at home against Russellville on Friday night.
Hartselle 94 – (10-12) West Point 68 (varsity boys)
Both teams traded points early on, but the Warriors broke a 5-5 tie with a three from Kolton Sapp and a layup by Kobe Bowers. The Tigers answered back with 10 in a row to take a 15-10 lead. A Sapp three cut it to 18-15. He finished with 10 points in the period to help keep his team in the game, but the Tigers wound up taking a 26-21 lead into the second period.
Hartselle continued its red-hot shooting, scoring the first 14 points of the quarter before Rylan Jones ended the run with a layup. The Tigers pushed their lead above 20 at one point and the Warriors went into the locker room trailing 50-31.
Sapp looked to spark the West Point offense early in the second half, scoring the first five points to make it a 50-36 game, but the Warriors never got any closer after that as Hartselle quickly pushed its lead back to 20. The Warriors never got out of the double-digit hole the rest of the game and wound up falling 94-68.
Sapp finished with 19 points for West Point. Aubry Cleghorn added 10 points, five rebounds and a steal. Tyler White ended up with 10 points, two rebounds and a pair of steals. Tyler Thompson added eight points, four rebounds and a steal. Will Cochran finished with eight points as well, along with three rebounds, two assists and a steal. The Warriors will look to regroup on Friday night when they take on Russellville at home.
