Jamie Brown is my guest this week on Community with Carol.  Jamie founded the Senior Outreach Organization back in April of 2018.  I have personally attended the Outreach and enjoyed watching Jamie serving the seniors in our community.

Sitting down to talk with a Jamie is always fun, but when she has her sweet mother Barbara Whitehead with her, I know we are going to laugh even more.  Barbara has so many stories to tell and I have never seen her without a smile.   I think that is where Jamie gets her servant’s heart and positive attitude.

Jamie has endured so many health problems but you wouldn’t know it by seeing her at the Senior Outreach Organization.  She has a meal prepared for 40 or more seniors every Saturday night.   Not only does she have the meal ready to serve, but she also sings in her mother’s band.  The Junction Band plays almost every Saturday night for the Outreach.  Jamie’s job isn’t over after the music stops; she is the one you will find in the kitchen with the pots and pans after the evening has ended.

Jamie and Barbara both work hard to find donors to provide food and help pay the rent on the building.  That is how I met them.  Kitty Spears told me about what they were doing and asked if I could provide a meal one night; I did and I was hooked.  I had the best time at the Outreach!  Those seniors were so much fun! We talked, laughed, danced and sang the whole night.

The Senior Outreach Organization met for the first time this past Saturday night in its new location.  It has moved from the VFW to The Link of Cullman County.  The new address is 708 9th St. SE, Cullman, AL 35055.  It is not affiliated with The Link of Cullman County, it is only renting the building.

It has also reduced the number of evenings the group meets to the first, second and third Saturday of each month.  The meal begins at 5 p.m. and the entertainment starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m.   Each night, you will find this group closing the evening in a circle and holding hands.  They say a prayer and all sing a beautiful gospel song.

Jamie and Barbara do so many extra things for the individuals who come to the outreach.  For New Year’s they had many activities and prizes for each winner.

“Keeping the seniors active, feeding them a balanced meal and giving them lots of hugs is our mission,” Jamie told me.

It helps them physically, mentally and spiritually.  She also said they love visitors!

If you would like to find out more about this organization, you have an opportunity Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.  The seniors will be performing their version of “Hee Haw” at the Donald Green Senior Center in Cullman.  Each senior has worked so hard to remember lines and been diligently attending practices.

I encourage you all to reach out to Jamie through the Facebook  page “Senior Outreach Organization” (www.facebook.com/Senior-Outreach-Organization-897218200457471) or call her at 256-339-9863 and see how you can become involved with the seniors in our community.
