Grace Episcopal Church Holds Annual Blessing of the Animals

CULLMAN – Grace Episcopal Church will hold its annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday afternoon, October 5, 2014 at 2 p.m.  This is open to the public and all those with pets are invited to attend. Be sure to bring your cats, dogs, birds or any other small animals by the church so they can receive their blessing. Along with special blessings, there will also be water and treats available for all the four-legged critters.

The Blessing of the Animals is a custom done in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is celebrated on October 4, and his love for all creatures. It was Francis who first introduced the idea that human beings are only one of a multitude of God’s creations and that all are considered blessed in God's eyes.

According to the Humane Society, “St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals & environment could be viewed as the original Earth Day advocate. Francis' devotion to God was expressed through his love for all of God's creation. St. Francis cared for the poor and sick, he preached sermons to animals, and praised all creatures as brothers and sisters under God.”

Animals and humans share a very special bond. For some folks, an animal is all they have in life that keeps them going from day to day. Our pets are considered part of our families; we love them as if they were our own children so why not have them blessed, right?
