CULLMAN – Cullman’s People Against a Littered State (PALS) won big this year at the state Governor’s Awards program, held Nov. 7 at the Marriott at Capitol Hill in Prattville. The annual awards program is sponsored by the Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS) and recognizes groups and individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment in the areas of litter control, recycling, local clean-up efforts, environmental education and volunteerism.
In addition to the annual Governor’s Awards categories, PALS recognized and presented scholarships to the state winners of the 2017–18 Alabama Clean Campus Program. The Clean Campus Program focuses on implementing litter education programs in Alabama schools. Approximately 600 schools are enrolled in the program, which is sponsored by Alabama PALS, ALFA and the Alabama Farmers Cooperative.
Cullman County Clean Campus winners:
- First place: Parkside School
- Third place: Cullman City Primary School
- Honorable Mention: Hanceville Elementary
Governor’s Award winners:
- The City of Cullman Sanitation Department won the Outstanding City Award.
- The Governor’s Award for Law Enforcement went to Sheriff Matt Gentry and the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office for its dedication to picking up litter on Cullman County roads.
- Cullman County PALS Committee won the Governor’s Outstanding County Award for all its efforts in keeping Cullman clean, which is an ongoing effort. It also won the Coca-Cola “Don’t Drop it on Alabama” Spring Cleanup Award for its efforts in recycling while cleaning up the roadways.
- The Governor’s Award for Business and Industry went to Webb Wheel Products of Cullman for its outstanding work in recycling.
- Cherrie Haney, president of Cullman PALS was presented the Don Hines Memorial Award for her leadership efforts in keeping Cullman special.
