HANCEVILLE – Students enrolled in Wallace State’s TRIO/Student Support Services program recently completed a community service project by delivering canned goods to Cullman Caring for Kids (CCK) and the new Carpenter’s Cabinet food pantry in Colony. CCK reported to The Tribune that it received 359 pounds of groceries, and Colony indicated that its pantry received approximately 175 individual canned goods.
Program Secretary Kathy Taylor told The Tribune, “TRIO/SSS is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that serves first-generation and low-income students. Our objectives are to increase persistence, graduation and or transfer rates by offering a variety of services to our participants.
“We have a community project every year, which includes a canned food drive. This year we were overwhelmed at the number of students that participated in the project. We were able to distribute the food collected to Cullman Caring for Kids and to the Town of Colony. We enjoy seeing our students giving back to the community, and they take pride in being able to do this every year.”
