FAIRVIEW – First Baptist Church of Fairview held its sixth annual Free Community Thanksgiving Meal and Coat Giveaway recently.
Pastor David Chambers shared, “God has blessed us; we see this as a way of showing God’s ways.”
The annual event started small, within the church, said members, but now, the church feeds at least 500 people per year. This year, they even sent out plates to 160 shut-ins.
FBC of Fairview’s Women’s Missionary Union Director Debbie Keaton, said, “It’s as much a blessing for us as it is the community.”
Keaton noted the big meal has volunteers from the church from ages 5 to 87. Planning for the event begins at the end of October with gathering food, and the church has two or three prep days or nights.
Keaton said the church prepared 140 pounds of turkey, 75 pounds of ham and an estimated 250 pounds of sweet potatoes.
“And a lot of deserts,” smiled Chambers.
In addition to the meal, the church also gave winter coats and clothing to those in need.
