HUNTSVILLE – Eight local squads made the trip to the Von Braun Center in Huntsville to compete in the North Super Regional Tournament this week, but unfortunately, most of them were sent home early.
As usual, the Addison Lady Bulldogs have punched their ticket to the state tournament in Class 2A after sweeping Horseshoe Bend and Fyffe with ease on Thursday before getting past Cedar Bluff in the semifinal round and defeating Winston County in straight sets in the North championship match. The Lady Bulldogs will face Fayetteville in the Elite Eight round of the state tournament at the Birmingham CrossPlex Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Addison will be joined by Fairview in Class 4A and Meek in Class 1A. The Lady Aggies secured a spot at the state tournament in Birmingham on Friday with wins over Cleburne County and West Morgan. Fairview got by the Tigers in straight sets to start the day and knocked off West Morgan in four very tight sets to advance to the semifinal round Saturday morning. In the first two rounds on Friday, Alivia Boyll and Micah Means racked up 27 and 38 assists, respectively while Daisy Manasco collected a team-high 28 kills. Tess Bailey and Katie Ball each added 14 kills as well. The Lady Aggies fell to Central Florence in a long and close semifinal round, ending with a 19-17 Fairview loss in the fifth set. The Lady Aggies will now have a little time off to rest up and prepare for their match with Providence Christian Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
The Lady Tigers will have a match to prepare for next week as well. Meek secured its spot in Birmingham on Friday by sweeping Donoho and Belgreen. The Lady Tigers fell in five sets to Athens Bible in the semifinal round Saturday morning, but they’ll be back on the court Wednesday at 11 a.m. to take on Pleasant Home in the first round of the state tournament.
The remaining local teams ended their seasons in the Von Braun Center after putting together excellent 2018 campaigns. The sheer number of local teams represented in the North Super Regional created a heavy Cullman County presence in Huntsville this week.
Cullman 1 – Hazel Green 3: 18-25, 25-23, 11-25, 10-25
The Lady Bearcats’ playoff run came to an end Thursday afternoon after they fell to Hazel Green in four sets. Cullman finishes the season as Area 14 runner-up at 19-21. Cullman will lose just three seniors from this squad and is in good shape to bounce back in 2019.
West Point 1 – East Limestone 3: 21-25, 25-19, 25-27, 21-25
After putting together a stellar 44-7 record in the regular season, the Lady Warriors came up short against East Limestone in four sets to bring a great season to an end in the North Super Regional. West Point will lose two All-County players in Josie Huckaby and Selena Clark to graduation but will still have a lot of talent returning to the court next season.
Cold Springs 1 – Sumiton Christian 3: 18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25
The Lady Eagles are area champions and have amassed an impressive 33-10 record but couldn’t get past Sumiton Christian on Thursday to keep their postseason run alive. Cold Springs will be graduating six seniors from this team in May but there are several young starters coming back to fill those roles.
Holly Pond 3 – Pisgah 2: 25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 22-25, 16-14
Holly Pond 1 – Glencoe 3: 25-20, 18-25, 10-25, 17-25
The Lady Broncos were playing their best volleyball of the season this week in both the area tournament and at the Von Braun Center. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to carry them to a state tournament bid. Holly Pond knocked off Pisgah in a five-set thriller to get Thursday started on the right foot but couldn’t sustain it for the matchup with Glencoe. The Lady Broncos’ season ended in a place where not many people thought it could, the quarterfinals of the North Super Regional. There are seven seniors on this Holly Pond squad that will be missed next season, but 2018 ends on a high note for the Lady Broncos and that can only help them going forward.
Vinemont 0 – Geraldine 3: 11-25, 9-25, 5-25
Vinemont’s solid 2018 run came to an end Thursday morning after the Lady Eagles fell to Geraldine in straight sets. Vinemont finished the regular season at 20-19 and the top seed in Area 13 but couldn’t quite sustain that play once the postseason arrived. The Lady Eagles have a lot of experience returning in 2019 but will have to replace the production of seniors like Madison Oliver, Taylor McClure, Cassidi Robertson and All-County Team selection Rachel Hall if they want to make it back to Huntsville.
