HOLLY POND – The Broncos hosted the Vinemont Eagles Friday night in a game that was for more than just bragging rights. By holding off the Eagles 38-20, Holly Pond has punched its ticket to the postseason.
Holly Pond got the ball to start the game but couldn’t get anything going on offense. On the ensuing possession, Vinemont got the ball and put together a scoring drive that ended with junior wideout Teague Whatley scoring the first touchdown of the game. The rest of the quarter was Holly Pond attempting to break through the Eagles’ defense and the first quarter ended with Holly Pond on the 25-yard line.
The second quarter started with senior running back Jeremiah Holmes scoring a touchdown for the Broncos. A 2-point conversion put Holly Pond in the lead 8-6. The Broncos kept the Eagles out of the end zone and drove the ball in for another score, this time from freshman running back Tyler Simmons. After another 2-point conversion, Vinemont received the ball, but couldn’t go anywhere with it. Holly Pond got the ball back and pushed down the field on another scoring drive that was capped off by another touchdown from Simmons. There wasn't a conversion this time though, and the first half ended with the Broncos on top 22-6.
The third quarter had no scoring or interesting plays until roughly halfway through. A stalemate in the defenses was broken up by Holly Pond with a quick touchdown pass from quarterback Kyler Chaney to senior tight end Alex Corneglio. The 2-point conversion made it 30-6 Broncos. The quarter moved on with Vinemont slowly driving forward until an interception made by senior safety Isaac Ludwig occurred in the last moments of the quarter.
The fourth quarter began with a rushing touchdown from Ludwig that put Holly Pond up 38-6. Halfway through fourth quarter, the Eagles started to show strength and broke through the Broncos’ line to cut the lead to 38-12. Vinemont was able to score again late in the game to make it 38-20, but it was too little too late for the Eagles.
Holly Pond and Vinemont will both wrap up regular season play with rivalry matchups next week. The Broncos will make the short trip over to face (4-5) Fairview and the Eagles will host (4-5) Cold Springs.
