CULLMAN – Following the devastating tornados of 2011 which left most of downtown Cullman in ruins, the Spears family didn’t throw in the towel and walk away after the family-owned establishment was literally blown to the ground.
“It has been open since 1919, but the Spears family has owned it since 1967. We are now on the third generation of Spears’ owners,” Busy Bee owner Kyle Spears said. “We have always tried to have a family friendly restaurant with good food at affordable prices.”
The family fought back from injury – then owner Kitty Spears was trapped inside the building during the tornado and suffered several broken bones – and forced themselves to have the business up and running within a year of the tornado.
“After rebuilding, the Busy Bee reopened its doors on Friday, April 27th 2012 at 6 a.m.,” Spears said.
Now, three years later, the Bee is preparing a reopening celebration which doubles as the business’ 96th year in Cullman.
“We are planning on having a crawfish boil and it will be served while supplies last,” he said. “We’ll also have a drink special with a $5 grilled honey bourbon lemonade. The live entertainment starts at 7 p.m."
