ADDISON– The Addison Bulldogs (Class 2A, Region 7) got the best of the Vinemont Eagles (Class 3A, Region 5) Friday night, 38-12, in front of their home crowd after losing a tight game, 28-22, to the Eagles last season.
Vinemont received the ball only to go three-and-out. Addison got the ball, went right down the field, and on fourth down Zayne Guthrie scampered for the first touchdown of the game with 6:14 remaining in the first quarter to put the Bulldogs ahead, 8-0.
After a delay of game on the first play to put the Eagles behind the chains they went three-and-out once again, and the Bulldogs didn’t waste the opportunity, embarking on a long, time-consuming drive that ended on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Guthrie to Luke Chambers, extending the lead to 16-0 with only 3 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession the Eagles drove the ball all the way down to the 10-yard line but were stopped on downs, and it didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to march down the field thanks to two long runs by Grant Rice. On fourth-and-goal from the 6, Chambers found Guthrie in the corner of the end zone on a fake field goal, pushing the lead to 24-0 with only 5 seconds left until halftime.
On the first play from scrimmage of the second half, Rice went 54 yards right up the middle for a touchdown, extending Addison’s lead to 30-0. Vinemont continued to play hard as Jack Hill found Dustin Moore on a 23-yard touchdown strike putting the Eagles on the board, 30-6, with 9:39 left in the third quarter. The Eagles attempted an onside kick, made it, and drove the ball all the way down to the 1-yard line looking to stifle the Bulldogs’ momentum, but a fumble put an end to that. The Eagle defense kicked it up a notch, forcing a Bulldog fumble, and once again Vinemont got close to the end zone, but Addison’s Gage Gilliland intercepted the ball, keeping the Eagles at bay.
In the fourth, a pick by Chambers set Addison up with excellent field position, and on the ensuing play Guthrie called his own number, going 13 yards to make the score 38-6 with 8:10 remaining in the game. Thanks to an excellent return plus penalty yardage, Vinemont was set up only 30 yards from the end zone, and a couple plays later a 1-yard touchdown run by Dallin Dinkle put more points on the board for the Eagles, 38-12, with 6:54 remaining in the game.
Once the Bulldogs received the kick, they ran out the clock out thanks to 11 straight running plays, securing Addison’s 38-12 victory.
Addison improves to 5-1 and will take on Colbert County next Friday on the road.
Vinemont falls to 2-3 and will welcome Fultondale at home.
